Scotland’s woodland creatures inspire Lydia MacDonald Design glassware

Woodland creatures, from foxes to roe deer, are the inspiration behind East Lothian based designer Lydia Macdonald’s work. Established in 2012, Lydia Macdonald Design makes bespoke, hand-etched glass products. The collections of contemporary hand-etched glassware are inspired by the woodlands close to Lydia’s studio in the village of Pencaitland.

Recent commissions include a collaboration with NB Gin to create bespoke etched bottles for the BRIT awards 2017. Lydia continues to work with Great British Menu judge and Michelin starred Chef Michael Smith on the glassware for his Loch Bay Restaurant on the Isle of Skye.

Along with one-off commissions, Lydia’s designs are stocked in some of Britain’s leading independent design and homeware retailers, most notably the House of Bruar and Johnstons of Elgin.

Speaking about her work, Lydia said: “I seek inspiration from the beautiful woodlands and landscapes that are close to my studio in East Lothian. Each stencil I make for my glassware is only used once - little variations occur, making every piece unique.”

Lydia works from her home studio in Pencaitland, East Lothian where she balances home life, work and looking after her two boys.
